Description As Books Red Horizons: The True Story of Nicolae and Elena Ceausescus' Crimes, Lifestyle, and Corruption

This book is painful read for numerous reasons. Romania under Communism was no less tragic than Romania under Fascism. One ventures into such subject matter knowing ahead of time that the information is going to be unpleasant. But the book doesn’t delve deeply into the real miseries caused. Instead, the CeauÅŸescu s are paraded out on nearly every page like grotesque marionettes, Pacepa the simple and nearly silent recorder of their excesses and venality. That they were vain and megalomaniacal, I have no doubt. But Nicolae CeauÅŸescu rose to power and kept it for numerous years. He couldn't have done so without a measure of intelligence and political savvy or without being propped up by collaborators.

In holding the positions he purports to have had, Pacepa must have done his share of the type of fawning he describes his colleagues doing. As head of the DIE, his hands had to have gotten dirty accomplishing the deeds Ceausescu demanded. I expected deeper revelations of the actual oppression (prison conditions, numbers executed, etc.) more than the embarrassing antics of Elena and her son Nicu.

Lastly, though there are numerous references to Jews, Germans, and Hungarians in Romania and Ceausescu's dislike and exploitation of them, I find it telling that there is only one passing reference to Gypsies, and that in the form of an adjective where a government official is describes as "a Gypsy looking fellow." For a country housing the largest Gypsy populations in the world, this is startling.

A story about vicious men in control of a big corporation. Anything as long as it makes money. Yet people with much less style than the mafiosi of Henry Hill. Still, the much interesting read are the comments, the petty people hurt by the imagined pain felt by their idol. A study about the virtual relationship between perfectly unremarkable people and a picture on the wall would be a far more interesting story. It would explain from the love of an invisible god to the veneration of a disgusting

Learned absolutely NOTHING! Except, of course, that anyone can publish a book! One of only a few books that I will not finish. I CANNOT find anything on Roumania.Pitched it!

Joco and Reni lived in our condo for six years and gave us this book. Joco grew up under the Ceausescu dictatorship in Romania and at the time of the revolt in 1989, he was 14 years old. While this book may not be of interest to most readers, although it is both fascinating and horrible, I read it in honor of many of our Hungarian friends of Romanian descent.

Every Romanian should read this book in order to find out more about the crimes that Nicolae Ceausescu committed and the great fortune that he gathered while the Romanians where queuing to buy a slice of bread..

Dacă as putea scrie

All his books are written as articles for tabloids - everything has to be shocking, and bombastic. No detailed and sincere data like in the books of Mitrokhin or Gordievski. There is so much inexactness in the data that is available for anyone, that I cannot trust his "secrets" .He presents himself very detached from Ceausescu and the others. I wonder how he could work for such a detestable regime for so long until he decided to switch sides. He does not say, and his motivations for deserting the
