I liked this book. I loved the espionage & CIA related incidents in the book. I was a racy book & I could hardly put it it down. I loved the ending, it was very touching. It shows that even spies, hit men & sharp shooters have a life & a human side to them. I loved the character Helga the best, even though she only appeared in the book for a short while.This was a quick read where I couldn't put it down - it had enough plot twists and turns that just kept you wanting to see what happened. Love the characters and the will they or won't they anticipation. I will continue to read Tess's books not just the Rizzole & Isles series which is how I came across this author in the first place. If you are after a quick read with a good shot of suspense, intrigue and a dose of romance have a crack at this book!
Having read some of Gerritsen's recent novels, I picked up this unabridged audiobook from the library for a road trip.The suspense/thriller part of the plot was good, as I expected, but I was confused by what seemed to be anachronisms: referring to the "KGB" and "East Germany", using pay phones not cell phones. The pseudo-soft-core "romantic" scenes were just plain annoying. Looking the book up on Amazon I found that Call after Midnight was originally published as a Harlequin novel in 1987! --
I started listening to this book as a patron at the library said there was a lot of skipping on the first CD. As I listened to the CD I became more involved in the story so I checked it out to finish it, which I did in one night! I couldn't sleep until I found out what happened to Sarah Fontaine's husband. Gerritsen was recommended to me by the same person who insisted I read the JD Robb collection, so I had to give it a go. Call After Midnight tells the story of Simon Dance (alias Geoffrey Fontaine), who fakes his death in a Berlin hotel room. Not her best work. It felt a bit like an amateur had written it. A bit too messy and all over the place
I was really disappointed with this book. I understand it's a very early work of Gerritsen's so she is forgiven! This shows itself in the overused phrases and what I consider poor wording choices.We are told the main character is plain not beautiful very early on in the story we dont need it repeated every two pages or by every male character she encounters.Worth reading = yes if you like Gerritsen as it shows how far she has come.
