Laughs abound in this bestselling Christmas classic by Barbara Robinson! The Best Christmas Pageant Ever follows the outrageous shenanigans of the Herdman siblings, or “the worst kids in the history of the world.” The siblings take over the annual Christmas pageant in a hilarious yet heartwarming tale involving the Three Wise Men, a ham, scared shepherds, and six rowdy kids.Ralph, Imogene, Leroy, Claude, Ollie, and Gladys Herdman are an awful bunch. They set fire to Fred Shoemaker’s toolshed, blackmailed Wanda Pierce to get her charm bracelet, and smacked Alice Wendelken across the head. And that’s just the start! When the Herdmans show up at church for the free snacks and suddenly take over the Christmas pageant, the other kids are shocked. It’s obvious that they’re up to no good. But Christmas magic is all around and the Herdmans, who have never heard the Christmas story before, start to reimagine it in their own way.
This year’s pageant is definitely like no other, but maybe that’s exactly what makes it so special.

This was totally a walk-down-childhood-memory-lane read for me. Once year, when I was like 12, I read this TWICE...back to back! IN ONE DAY. So you can say it's a definite absolutely adored favourite book. And even now, when I'm an old grey melon of a human, IT IS STILL HILARIOUS. And special! It's like only 100-pages, so it definitely just gets in and says what it wants to say, no fluffing about. But it's a) hilarious, and b) really thought-provoking, and c) exceptionally well written."Hey! Unto you a child is born!"Muzzy has read this aloud to us every Christmas since the dawn of time and Christmas isn't Christmas until she does so. She always cries through the end.The book points out that Mary and Joseph were just people. They had days when they woke up on the wrong side of the bed, and they managed to burn the bread, and cut themselves and stub their toes. They weren't perfect, which just makes the Christmas story more so. Because God can use anybody--even an unwed
This is a favorite not just because it resonants with my life experience, raised as a white church kid, but also because it was read often to our family by parents who were often in situations where they were the ones pulled in to produce and/or manage the holiday "scene" or "program" for our community. I think I speak for my sibs as I claim a "we" pronoun here - we were often cast as whatever manager character was either not available that year or more of same was needed. . . I've been

My favorite Christmas book ever, perhaps one of my favorite books in the world. An easy quick ready that everyone should read! I love the humor and simplicity and the reminder of the wonderful season! I enjoy reading it every year!
This was one of my favorite childhood books, so I thought I should revisit it. It follows the story of a town's Christmas pageant, which is overtaken one year by the Herdmans, the worst kids in the history of the world. They lie and cheat and smoke cigars, burn down buildings, and are probably responsible for 90% of all bruises incurred by the elementary school aged children in the town. Though the changes in the Herdmans aren't extreme and don't even seem to affect most of them, the rest of the
I loved this book. It is such a great story. But what I loved, loved, loved was the audio. The narrator did an outstanding job....definitely 5 star worthy here. I grew up in a lot of military housing and the first thing we (my older siblings) did was to identify the Herdmans. It didn't matter where we lived, there was always always that family we steered clear of. So I had to laugh at a lot of this. Maybe a time or two, we were the Herdmans. Just sayin'.
LOVE this story. I've read the book at least twice, plus had the privilege of being involved with the stage production three times. A humorous, real-life view of Christmas on both sides of the tracks and what happens and how both sides are changed when they collide at Christmas.
