Money is nothing but freedom with money you can create your own morality . This is the credo that the characters live by in Saira Viola's novel of social realism : Crack Apple and Pop . At times a gritty slice of life , at others a metafictive commentary on pop culture . A dark satire on the culture of greed with a gripping plot at its heart . A young black boxer is forced into a lfe of crime after suffering a fatal injury in the ring.Built around that story is a web of satirical plots , subplots and character portraiture that seek to take apart contemporary values and society.

A sweepingly good read . The general thrust of the story is that anyone will hustle anything to survive . A handsome black boxer is forced into a life of crime after a vicious bout in the ring but is he a victim of circumstance and racist abuse or is he a survivor or is he none of those and just a guy who has fallen on hard times . Tony wants to get out of the drug business though so we feel sorry for him and sympathize with his character right through to the end we are rooting for him . PlayfulI thought this book was exceptionally good for new fiction , the style, the plot, the characters and the social commentary that scores the novel . I had to give it five stars . I especially like the fact that the protagonist in the story comes from humble beginnings and that the writer satirises both liberal and conservative ideas and concepts . It's clever and very fresh.
A Runyonesque depiction of the underbelly of London's night and druglife, where all stratas of society collide in their search for the next big buzz. Crack Apple and Pop follows the arc of a promising boxer, career cut short, who falls into the orbit of a Yardie Don. The language and terminology is sharply observed and authentic. Loved it!

Following in the footsteps of such experimental literature writers such as T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein and futurist author F.T. Marinetti, author Saira Viola has created a new writing style called Sonic Scatter-script. It's a style of writing that includes lyrical beats, art, and popular culture woven into the dialogue and story line to give a really fresh twist on the plot and characters. Some examples of this pulsating and vibrant style of writing are: "He was tall and skinny a
I was given Crack Apple Pop as a gift. Wow! This book is absolutely amazing! It is not the predictable, cookie-cutter, formula-written best-seller that leaves you asking yourself half-way through "Haven't I already read this?" This book is a genuinely unique, down-and-dirty taste of the brutality and narcissism of the down-and-out, other-side-of-the-tracks, making-it-shaking-it, on the fringe of high-style lifestyle life. Saira Viola must be a poet at heart. The imagery in this book is
Social realism, huh? Here's some commonplace, everyday life examples of social realism for you:✔ Escaping the oppressive confines of Walmart to find a refuge in the glory of the lower-middle class glamour that is Safeway.✔ High-fiving a shirtless gang-bunger covered in unreadable tattoos who is proudly taking his baby-mama for a ride on a motorized shopping cart he just stole.✔ Telling two very polite burly thugs that you do not wish to buy a home entertainment system that they have in the back
I really liked this book , it was different unique and I can see the poetry echoed in the work from the poetry collections . There is a definite style to it everything is written with a flourish Viola calls it sonic scatterscript . The themes within it are relevant for the times we live in and there are some very graphic descriptions of drug taking , one night stands with strippers , and the poetry of humanity . London is ripped apart as a city with toxic race crime , class divisions and a
