Interpretation As Books Elephant Man
John Merrick had lived for more than twenty years imprisoned in a body that condemned him to a miserable life in the workhouse and to humiliation as a circus sideshow freak. But beneath that tragic exterior, within that enormous and deformed head, thrived the soul of a poet, the heart of a dreamer, the longings of a man. Based on the extraordinary motion picture that captured the heart of America.

That book isn't new and I didn't buy it. I got a big box of old books in German from a friend and that one was in there as well. The story is just amazing. You can't put it aside. And you will be shocked how cruel people can be. When I finished the book I found out that the Elephant Man really existed!!My general experience is that the book is often better than the film and is why I normally read the book first. Not in this case, though. I have only just come across this book, but saw the film years ago. It's definitely better this way round as you already have a picture of the main characters in your mind. But the film is so brilliant that it would be almost impossible to match it for drama and suspense. An average 3* book, a brilliant 5* film. In both cases, though, it's hard to imagine that
An adaptation of the film, that once was interesting to me as was the play, but going to wikipedia and read about Joseph (not John) Merrick I read about his life which was not truly depicted accurately. It was a movie. Someone should make a film that accurately depicts his life. Reading this was a bit of a chore after I discovered that his life was not filled with the abuse depicted in the film. In reality it was his idea to be a side show attraction and so forth. Eye opening in its another

Lying on bed looking at the ceiling and my mind numb from the wonders of this strange creature; the Elephant Man. The world looked at him in disgust, spat at him, poked his sides, treated him horribly as this creature was on display for a price. John Merrick, the Elephant Man, just watched his days go by, feeling no pain and never once wanted to look at his reflection in the mirror. I cried, I squirmed, I laughed, I got angry... People can be so tough and so mean. Dr. Treves, who brought Merrick
The most heart felt book I have ever read. It will capture your heart the first chapter.
I believe this is one of the first books Ive read that is based on the movie, rather than vice versa. At times it crosses the line into sentimentality, but romantics will take heart and a handful of tissues. Both the movie and the book condensed and misrepresented the real history of the real Elephant Man for dramatic effect. They also got his name wrong; it was Joseph and not John, but this is a common mistake attributed to his doctors memoir. However, what Christine Sparks captures is the
I can't explain why I love this novel, It's so heartbreaking and depressing. but it will always be one of my most favorite books! <3
